Artistic Approach
I am deeply passionate about utilizing the art of movement to go beyond mere entertainment. My objective as an artist is to create dance pieces that not only captivate audiences but also provoke reflection, investigation, and questioning of the multitude of issues affecting my community and the world at large.
I am particularly drawn to addressing social, political, tribal equality, gender balance, marginalized spaces, and various other subjects. One aspect that truly fascinates me is the rich history and narratives that are embedded within African indigenous dance forms. Every step carries a profound physical look that tells stories of the past.
Hailing from Bariga, a less advantaged region in mainland Lagos, I have found myself at a crossroads where I can either succumb to the labels associated with my background or rise above them. As an artist, I have chosen to embark on a mission to challenge and alter the misinterpretation of my community through the transformative power of dance.
By using dance as a tool for change, I aim to break down stereotypes, shed light on overlooked narratives, and embrace the resilience, diversity, and beauty that Bariga embodies. Through my art, I aspire to inspire unity, empathy, and understanding, not only within my immediate community but also among people from different walks of life.
In summary, my artistic approach is grounded in the belief that movement has the potential to bring about profound social transformation. By infusing my performances with thought-provoking themes and drawing upon the heritage of African indigenous dance, I strive to challenge perceptions, ignite dialogue, and foster positive change in my community and beyond.”
