ABOUT ME

Ridwan Rasheed

Ridwan Rasheed is a Nigerian contemporary dancer, choreographer, researcher, and art activist from Bariga, Lagos, with ancestral roots in Oyo State. I currently work between Berlin, Germany and Lagos, Nigeria. Developing a practice that moves between Yoruba Bata dance traditions and contemporary performance, while engaging with critical theory and experimental forms.

Practice

In my work, I approach the body as a site of ancestral knowledge, memory, and resistance; something that is continuously shaped by postcolonial realities and present-day socio-political conditions.

Through choreography and performance, I explore how identity is constructed, challenged, and reimagined across different cultural and geographic spaces. I am interested in how movement can hold history while also creating new possibilities for the future.

Growing up in Bariga, a less privileged community in Lagos, has deeply shaped my artistic perspective. My work reflects themes of struggle, faith, marginalization, and social consciousness.

I am committed to challenging the misrepresentation of communities like mine by creating work that highlights resilience, complexity, and lived experience. For me, dance is a tool to shift perception and open up new thoughts.

I work across stage performances, dance films, and collaborative research projects, often in both formal and informal contexts. My works have been presented across Nigeria and Europe, engaging with transnational conversations around identity, climate justice, and cultural memory.

I have collaborated with artists and institutions like Christoph Winkler, Qudus Onikeku, Seun Awobajo, Segun Adefila, Flora Egbonu and Chris Salter. These collaborations have been supported by organizations such as Neustart Kultur, the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Europe, Kulturstiftung, and Kulturinitiativen Wien.
